There are plenty of trails throughout Sylvan Highlands that provide the residents with an excellent way to get out and enjoy nature. Even though this community is so close to downtown Portland, it doesn't feel too much like the city because of the mature trees, winding streets, and homes on big lots that are pretty secluded and private, some with valley or coastal views. Nearby the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, Portland Children's Museum, Japanese Gardens, Worlds Forestry Center, and the Veterans Vietnam Memorial provide residents with plenty of activities. Sylvan Highlands even includes the western part of Washington Park.

Although Sylvan Highlands is not considered a very walkable community, being near U.S. 26 makes commuting by car convenient. U.S. 26 does tend to get congested due to being so close to downtown, but there are numerous side streets that make excellent alternate routes to get to downtown Portland. If travelling by car is not what you desire, there is a light rail service that runs alongside Route 26 called the Max.
