St. Johns is commonly recognized as the Gateway to Nature with an abundance of parks and natural areas for everyone to enjoy. Cathedral Park, Chimney Park, George Park, Kelley Point Park, Pier Park, St. Johns Park offer plenty of outdoor activities and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Pier outdoor pool, St. Johns Community Center or Johns Racquet Center provide more structured, dedicated activities. Enjoy the waterways at Columbia Slough or bird watching at the Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area; opportunities to catch sight of bald eagles are not uncommon. Aside from play and exercise, St. Johns also has a couple of community gardens to promote healthy eating habits at Johns Community Garden or Pier Community Garden.
The only suspension bridge in the Willamette valley gives access to the St. John's neighborhood. The St. Johns Bridge is quite impressive and commonly compared to the Golden Gate Bridge. St. Johns is conveniently located only about 17 minutes by car to downtown Portland. There are not a lot of options for public transportation in St. Johns. The Trimet offers bus service to downtown Portland that ultimately provides other transportation options such as lite rail service.
Students attend schools in the Portland Public School District.
