Living in the St. Johns Neighborhood

The St. Johns neighborhood occupies the far end of North Portland where the Willamette and Columbia Rivers meet. A lot of the Portland real estate in this area was built from the 1940s and on. The small-town atmosphere of St. Johns takes its name from the majestic 80-year-old bridge, which can be seen from some well-situated homes. St. Johns is also home to Portland’s own Moonstruck Chocolatier company. You can pick up a truffles right from the factory story located near the foot of the St. Johns bridge.

North Lombard forms the commercial spine of St. Johns, and one can find dozens of excellent reasonably priced dining options. Proper Eats has become the go-to restaurant for vegetarians. Tulip Pastry Shop on North Lombard has been a favorite bakery since the early 1950s. Downtown St. Johns has many boutique small businesses including antiques, coffee, theaters, home decor, old fashion pharmacy and taverns.

Living in St. Johns

Located in North Portland on a peninsula made by the merging of the Columbia and Willamette River is the highly sought after neighborhood of St. Johns. The location of St. Johns, being on a peninsula, gives St. Johns a more detached and small town feel with quiet streets and beautiful treed lots. For residents that live close to downtown, they are within walking distance to some excellent amenities such as the post office, movie theaters, locally owned restaurants and boutiques, parks and more. 

The only suspension bridge in Willamette valley gives access to the St. John's neighborhood. The St. Johns Bridge is quite impressive and commonly compared to the Golden Gate Bridge. St. Johns is conveniently located only about 17 minutes by car to downtown Portland. There are not a lot of options for public transportation in St. Johns. The Trimet offers bus service to downtown Portland that ultimately provides other transportation options such as lite rail service. 

St. Johns is mostly commonly recognized as the Gateway to Nature with an abundance of parks and natural areas for everyone to enjoy. Cathedral Park, Chimney Park, George Park, Kelley Point Park, Pier Park, St. Johns Park offer plenty of outdoor activities and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Pier outdoor pool, St. Johns Community Center or Johns Racquet Center provide more structured, dedicated activities.  Enjoy the waterways at Columbia Slough or bird watching at the Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area; opportunities to catch sight of Bald Eagles is not uncommon. Aside from play and exercise, St. Johns also has a couple Community Gardens to promote healthy eating habits at Johns Community Garden or Pier Community Garden. 

Local shops and eateries pepper the streets with some unique styles, creative art and one of kind finds. St. Johns is the perfect place for the artistic mind to shine. While out exploring the variety of shops and boutiques, stop into a casual eatery for a bite to eat or one of the many coffee establishments for some of the best coffee you will ever find. St. Johns is able to provide residents and visitors a relaxed atmosphere to get away from the daily hustle living in a larger city tends to bring. 

Schools in St. Johns

St. Johns residents are served by the Portland Public School District. Roosevelt High School was recently renovated and now looks more like a college campus than a high school. Although, according to GreatSchools.org the ratings for the schools in St. Johns are lacking. Sitton Elementary School and George Middle School only managed a rating of 1/10 and James John Elementary School and Roosevelt High School only received a 2/10 rating. While the ratings for each school are determined by various key factors such as diversity, test scores, college readiness, etc. these schools do rank higher in certain areas vs. their overall rating and should definitely be considered on an individual need. There are also a few private schools in the area that can also be considered; however were not rated with GreatSchools.org, such as Open Meadow High School, Holy Cross Catholic School and Pathfinder Academy. 

Homes in St. Johns

Homes in St. Johns mostly consist of small to medium single family homes; anywhere from a studio up to four bedroom and apartment complexes/high rise apartments. St. John's home prices are still in the more expensive range for the national average but, really are affordable overall for the state. There is a good mixture of homeowners and renters, most likely due to the University of Portland's proximity. St. Johns is one of Portland's older communities and features a variety of home architecture styles, such as ranch, cape cods and the occasional Victorian to name a few.
