Many of my readers have heard me talk about our relationships with money. Yes, it’s true. You, I, everyone has a relationship with money. We treat it as if it was a person, and frequently we treat it as if it was someone we didn’t like very much. Someone, in fact, that we would rather not be in relationship with at all. The truth is, you are going to be in a relationship with money for the rest of your life. People may come and go, but money will be affecting you, always.

As America’s fascination with wine continues to grow wine cellars do also. Wine enthusiasts who have built their wine libraries and cellars find they have unique challenges when they need to move to a new home. Wine is a fickle liquid! When it is cared for properly the results can be exquisite. When it is mishandled the results can be disastrous. For this reason owners of wine cellars dread moving their collections. When several hundred bottles of considerable value are being moved to a new location is it really worth risking loss by having them moved incorrectly?

I am often asked by out-of-state residents if Portland is dog-friendly; I have a difficult time restraining my laughter. Is Portland dog-friendly? I do believe dog-friendly is an “English understatement” type of description for Portland. According to Dog Fancy, in 2006, Portland had 136,332 dogs living in a city that has roughly 500,000 residents. This magazine also credits Portland with THE Best All-Around City for Dogs in America.

As recently as 15 years ago, a professional deck builder might ask you if you wanted to build in tight knot or clear cedar, Ipe, or mahogany. The choices for decking were wood, wood, and wood.
Today there are about 70 manufacturers of composite decking, many companies offering several product lines with half a dozen pattern and color choices; and the pricing is competitive. As professional deck builders, here’s the problem as we see it: How can you select a relatively new product from so many choices of composite and know what to expect in the future? How will your deck look 5 years from now and how will it wear? Which manufacturer can you trust?

Feeling safe while you walk in the park, drive at night, and sleep in your own home is an important part of life. Many of my clients want to know how safe a neighborhood is when considering a home purchase. I point them to PortlandMaps.com to review the facts for themselves. I have found a few other websites that offer information on communities outside the Portland city limits; and I have provided links to other police departments.

I gave a teleclass earlier this year about the word ‘afford’ and how that word
controls us. I started to think about other aspects of ‘afford’, those of pattern, habit and belief. Our beliefs around what we can and can’t ‘afford’ come, like all our money beliefs, from our parents. We learned by observation what was affordable, and what wasn’t.

In this month’s Travel and Leisure Magazine, Portland was called American Eden. I never really thought of it like that. But now that they mention it, it does sound nice. It’s funny that they have to make comparisons like: “Northwest 23rd Street, the local equivalent of Rodeo Drive” and “the West Hills, the Portland equivalent of Beverly Hills”.

A discussion of how you acquired your money attitudes and beliefs
Our beliefs about money affect our lives every day. They color our relationships; they shape our homes and careers. We relate to money based on the attitudes and beliefs we have about it. Often these beliefs don’t really serve us. Yet, we often unconsciously cling to these beliefs, which we acquired as young children.

We all know money is actually a symbol, a concept given form. But are we truly aware of how pervasive that symbol is? Money originally evolved as a bartering tool. I give you money so I can buy your goat rather than having to exchange my wheat for the goat, since you really don’t want the wheat.
