Cool Off With a Swim in Benson Lake
Posted on: July 20, 2007
Need a great place to cool off and have a picnic with your family? Benson Lake on the Columbia Gorge fits the ticket. It is only 20 minutes outside Portland nestled between the high gorge walls and the expansive Columbia River. Take I-84 east past Rooster Rock park; Benson Lake State Park is the exit before Multnomah Falls (the tallest waterfall in Oregon). A large gazebo can be reserved for large parties, and many picnic tables are located close to the lake. Make sure you bring your inflatables; the gentle slope of the shore makes this a safe swim for children. Paddle boats are also welcome. The temperature in the gorge is always several degrees less than in town, and the nice cool water is very refreshing.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department charges a $3 fee (or $25 annually) for day use; bring your dollars because it is a drop box system. The park and restrooms are clean. Barbecue pits are not available, but I did see people with portable units. Many trees provide shade. I hope you enjoy it!

I used to take my children here when they were younger. The park is very “child friendly” and the scenery is spectacular. Get there before 11:00 for the best tables and proximity to the lake.
